Cycling in Andalusian mountains

Safety

Bikes & Security

As in most places, it’s a good idea to keep bikes secured when they’re not in use. Using a lock whenever the bike is left unattended helps reduce unnecessary risks. When possible, secure the bike to a fixed, immovable object and avoid leaving it unlocked in public or shared parking areas, including hotel parking.

We also recommend avoiding leaving bikes inside cars, especially if they are visible.

Insurance & Responsibility

Despite the overall safe and relaxed atmosphere, unexpected situations can happen. For this reason, we recommend that riders have third-party liability insurance during their trip.

In Spain, there is currently no simple or widely available insurance system covering rental bikes against theft, and for this reason our bikes are not insured against theft. Taking basic precautions and having appropriate personal insurance helps ensure peace of mind throughout your journey.

Roads & Traffic Awareness

Road conditions in Málaga and Andalusia are generally very good and safe for cycling. Many cyclists who come here for a cycling holiday note how attentive and respectful drivers usually are towards cyclists, especially on rural roads.

That said, there is one coastal section we do not recommend, despite how tempting it may look on the map – the road along the sea between Fuengirola and Gibraltar. We are often asked about this stretch, but it is frequently very busy, with minimal or no shoulders, making it far less comfortable and enjoyable for cycling. For a safer and more pleasant experience, we recommend choosing inland routes instead.

Weather & Riding Comfort

The climate in Málaga and Andalusia is generally very favourable for cycling year-round, but a little awareness goes a long way.

In summer, temperatures can be high, especially inland, so staying hydrated is essential. Make sure to drink water regularly during your rides and plan breaks accordingly.

In winter, conditions are often mild, but it’s a good idea to bring some warmer clothing. Some days can feel cooler, and temperatures in the mountains are noticeably lower than along the coast.

In Short

Andalusia is a place where cycling feels natural and enjoyable. With a bit of awareness and the same care you would take anywhere else, you can focus on what really matters – the ride, the landscapes and the experience.
