Cycling route from Málaga to Mijas
2-Day bikepacking trip from Málaga to Mijas, with an optional high-point extension to Repetidores de Mijas
85km 1534hm
Mijas Pueblo is one of the most iconic white villages of the Costa del Sol – a classic pueblo blanco set high above the coastline, combining panoramic views, traditional Andalusian charm and the calm atmosphere typical of mountain villages. Located west of Málaga, the route to Mijas crosses the more developed coastal areas and the first foothills of the Sierra de Mijas, allowing a gradual transition from seaside landscapes to elevated inland scenery.
This two-day route takes you from Málaga through the coastal towns of Torremolinos and Benalmádena before climbing into the mountains toward Mijas Pueblo, where we recommend spending the night.
For cyclists who enjoy more active days, there is also an optional climb to the Mijas Repetidores – a steep and well-known ascent among local riders. The gradients are demanding, but the views from the top extend across the coastline toward Marbella, the Strait of Gibraltar and, on clear days, even the mountains of Morocco.
On the way to Mijas and on the return route, you pass several cultural spots that can add variety to the journey if you feel like including them.
Route description
The first section of this cycling route begins in Málaga and follows the coastline west before gradually climbing into the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas. The route passes through Torremolinos and continues toward Benalmádena, where the urban environment gives way to quieter residential neighbourhoods and the first wider mountain views.
After Benalmádena, the ascent becomes more consistent. Before reaching the upper slopes, you pass near the Benalmádena Stupa, a large white Buddhist monument overlooking the coast – an interesting cultural landmark.
From here, the road winds upward along the southern slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, offering panoramic views of the coastline and the towns below. The approach to Mijas is one of the most pleasant parts of the day, with gentle mountain curves and quiet surroundings. As you arrive in the area, note the key junction: the road to the Repetidorеs turns right, while the road into Mijas Pueblo continues left.

Optional Ride: Mijas Repetidorеs
For those who enjoy steep mountain roads, the ascent to the Mijas Repetidoras (the antenna point and main viewpoint above the Sierra de Mijas) is one of the most recognised short climbs in the Málaga region. The road is narrow and quiet, with gradients that rise sharply from the first metres. Several sections exceed 10%, with short ramps reaching 15–18%.
This option is suitable only for experienced cyclists who feel comfortable with steep gradients and narrow roads.
The effort is rewarded with one of the widest panoramic viewpoints on the Costa del Sol – with views toward Marbella, the Strait of Gibraltar and, on clear days, the distant Atlas Mountains in Morocco.
Overnight in Mijas Pueblo
Staying overnight in Mijas Pueblo can be a pleasant way to end the day after a cycling journey, as the village is known for its charming white streets, viewpoints over the sea, small squares, local craft shops and a calm evening atmosphere that makes Mijas a memorable overnight stop in this part of Andalusia.
Beyond its charm, the village has a long historical and cultural background – reflected in its Moorish layout, whitewashed architecture, small chapels and viewpoints that reveal its historical role as a lookout over both the coastline and the surrounding sierras.

Return Route – Day 2
This day begins with a scenic descent from Mijas Pueblo toward the coast, bringing you down to the seaside town of Fuengirola. Once you reach the coastline, you can ride a short distance westward (away from Málaga) to visit Castillo Sohail, a hilltop fortress overlooking the river mouth – a simple cultural stop with wide views.
Fuengirola is also home to the Bioparc, a small and pleasant zoological park with carefully arranged areas and thoughtfully designed habitats. It can work as an optional stop, offering a enjoyable walk if there is time.
From Fuengirola, the road back to Málaga follows the coastline. In the Benalmádena area, you have the option to descend to the promenade and continue along the seafront, passing cafés, restaurants and beach terraces.
Guadalhorce River Mouth
If you’re riding a gravel, trekking or MTB bike, you can also include a visit to the Guadalhorce River Bird Reserve (Paraje Natural de la Desembocadura del Guadalhorce). This peaceful natural area sits at the river mouth and is accessible from the coastal route. From there, it is possible to return to Málaga via the wooden footbridge and continue along the bike paths that run beside the western beaches. Along the coast, several beachfront chiringuitos offer a simple way to mark the end of the journey, with fresh fish and local dishes for lunch or dinner.
